It was approximately 8pm yesterday, a cool friday evening night.  I just finished work and decided to do some shopping of my own so I  headed down to Cityhall.  The atmosphere was somewhat glum because of the recent financial crisis news that hit the airwaves and the media but that did not deter most singaporeans from hitting the malls.  I managed to find myself a pair of dark brown shoes from Pedro( I was in need of shoes and yes pedro was on sale!) After purchasing the shoes, I walked around a little more, casually glancing the merchandise that was on sale.
Whilst walking around, I chanced upon a visually handicapped man who was trying to find his way to the MRT station. Clearly, he was having much difficulty finding his way to the train station but  everyone around him was just bloody staring at him and nobody was even trying to assist nor give him any kind of direction towards his destination.
This situation annoyed and made me feel his plight,  I approached him and asked: “where do you want to go sir?” He calmly replied that he wanted to go home and to the mrt. I thought to myself, I might as well send him back and make sure he is safe.  I told him: “today sir, you take the taxi home”.  He felt all apologetic and replied in embarrassment and said that he  had no money to pay me. I replied and said;” it was alright, it is my treat” .
As I held his arm and guided him towards the taxi stand, people casually stared and some even smiled in approval at this weird combination of a chinese guy guiding a lanky visually handicapped indian man.  We finally got into the taxi and we made our way.  The taxi driver looked at me , casually smiled and nonchalantly asked “where do you want to go sir?” I said Jurong. We made our way and I sent him all the way back to the his house.  Apparently, the visually handicapped man, named ; Putrem was working as a massage therapist at raffles city.  He told me: for 2 years working as a massage therapist, he had never taken the taxi and he kept thanking me constantly.  We arrived at our destination and I sent him to the lift lobby with a feeling of relief in my heart knowing that he has arrived home safe and sound.
Putrem is an amazing individual and I saw so much strength in him despite his disabilities.  He would wake up everyday at 530 and slowly make his way to work everyday. I found this truly amazing.
